Pastries

The first time I ever bought sweets in for my colleagues was when I had my first contract, which was working at National Power in 1991, just after Charlie was born. I'd been in IT for only a couple of years or so at this point, so it was a little precocious of me to go freelance, but we had a new baby and the lead times on a permanent job made this my only choice.

I was also trying to lose a bit of weight - a recurring theme over the years - having happily joined in the increasing sedentary nature and appetite of a pregnancy despite not being the one who was pregnant. So, I would buy treats for my teammates from a petrol station on my way to work although not for myself. I sometimes wondered if I was experimenting with relative weight loss by making everyone around me larger.

Perhaps it's no coincidence then that as I try to lose a few pounds before the marathon, I decided to by pastries for the office, today.
