To Discover

Over the years, I have tried to discover that route of the former railway that served the First World War internment camp at Knockaloe near Peel.

The station at Peel is readily discernable after having closed down in the 1960s and the site of the former internment camp is also well known.  You would therefore think that it would be an easy job to connect the two and walk along the track bed.

Not a bit of it and it turns out I was completely wrong as to its location.

So this afternoon around 250 of us had the same thought and we were shown where it ran by a former railway man and an archaelogist.

We had a really good time and it culminated with a cup of tea at this new visitor centre that is due to be opened in a former school house in the Spring of next year.

The photograph shows a railway train entering the main entrance to Knockaloe Camp. At its height the camp held 26,000 internees in 1916, one of whom was Dr. Joseph Pilates and this was where he learned his trade!
