Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

2018 Friday — Goodbye Asphalt; Hello Cement

At 6:50 this morning the first jackhammer ripped open the silence as it dug its nose into and under the asphalt driveway that has been resting here since late winter of 1964, just before my parents and I moved into this brand new home.

Last week when the pavers, river rock, and artificial turf were installed, we knew the asphalt needed to go, but the cost of a new cement driveway was just over our limit and we thought the asphalt would have to last a while longer. Then a more-than-reasonable quote came in and we were “yes!”

We realized that the driveway makers and the fence builders would all be weaving their magic here on the same day. We were certain they could stay out of each other’s way. It was a symphony of construction sounds and a waltz without one misplaced step all throughout the day.

So the improvements continue on this little old house that’s again after 24 years become our home. I’ve lived in this home three separate times: as a teenager with my parents; as a young wife and momma when we purchased it from my folks; now as an empty-nester while finishing my career. The walls are filled with stories and the corners have memories piled high.

When I retire, we’ll move to our little lavender house in Cayucos on California’s Central Coast.
