Hawke's Shaft Pumping House, Cornwall
This is part of the Cornish Mineral Tramways Project and such may just qualify as a past railway empire.
This is one of many engine houses and old mining shafts dotted across West Cornwall, where the mining industry that once dominated the Cornish economy is no more.
This one is at Killfeth and is on one of the many cycle paths that follow the closed mineral tramways. It was operations in 1893 with an 80" engine, which was enlarged in 1912.
