Hardy's Well

My niece and I went to Christie's to visit her dad today. He's in a lot of pain but they've had him up and walking around so hopefully onwards and upwards.

As we were driving back home, we noticed writing on the side of this building and had a quick detour to see what it was all about.

Hardy's Well is an abandoned pub, a 200 year old building which has existed on the site since 1837.

Lemn Sissay is a poet and was elected Chancellor of the University of Manchester in 2015. During a conversation with a pal and the then landlord of Hardy's Well in 1994, Sissay said poetry should be more widely seen. He was challenged to write a piece for the side of the building which the landlord had painted in full onto the gable wall. It instantly made it a landmark and was the first piece of public poetry in what became a UK-wide project for Sissay.

Legend has it traffic claiming measures had to be introduced near the junction to prevent crashes as so many people were slowing down to read it.

No quote today I'm afraid, and I'll catch up with my comments when it's a bit calmer!
