Memorial

I went into town today to print off some CVs as there’s a couple of jobs that have come up that I want to throw myself in the ring for. I took the opportunity for a wander and came across this lovely memorial.

Putting the sexism about women supporting their men who work (suggesting that’s the women’s only role) aside, the sentiment is really nice.

Women often bear the brunt of difficulties like this. I think it’s known that men of certain times would drown their sorrows and the consequence would sometimes be violence. In a mining town I imagine that kind of thing happens a lot at various times, due to contract changes, mine closures, etc. In the same way the closure of the mines in the UK impacted on local communities.

It’s nice that the women have been appreciated.
