Auchengeich

Our Ramblers' walk on Tuesday was a relatively short affair around Moodiesburn and Stoneyetts.

On our way we passed the Auchengeich Miners' Memorial (pictured), a tribute to those who lost their lives in the pit disasters of 1931 and 1959.

On 22nd January 1931, six people were killed and five injured in an underground explosion, and 47 miners lost their lives on 18th September 1959 when a fire broke out in one of the shafts and those starting their shift that morning were killed by the smoke and carbon monoxide fumes. Later that day, with the fire still out of control, the National Coal Board took the difficult decision to flood the pit to extinguish the flames. The true price of coal.
