Amazing Oslo

Words can’t describe the fascinating day we have had here . There are so many museums with state of the art displays .
The day began with a coach trip around the city to see some main sights stopping at the Vigelslandsparken - a park full of sculptures by Gustav Vigeland depicting humanity in all its forms . It was beautiful there .
Then to Bygdoynes which was once an Island now joined to mainland - wealthy houses including the King’s Summer residence and farm ( we saw the King’s cows! ) .MMany of the must see museums are here within reasonable walking distance.
We strategy with the outdoor folk museum where ancient buildings from all over Norway have been rebuilt very like similar ones in Uk . Each group of buildings was from different areas of Norway . They were very beautiful- some people were dressed in authentic costumes as well . The smell of the pine trees around the buildings was glorious. Even 1950s apartments were represented.
Next we went to the Viking Museum where not only were some of the first ships found but also a wooden cart , the only one to be found and many artefacts including embroideries .
There were gallery platforms so you could look down on the ships .
The highlight of the day was the Fram Museum which houses the two ships Amundsen used for his navigation of the North West Passage and his journey to the South Pole . The museum has been voted Oslo’s most popular museum on TripAdvisor and justly so . On the Fram itself there is a surround audio visual display which enables one to experience sailing through the ice and storms whilst sitting on a gently tilting bench - we both felt as though we had been sailing afterwards . So many fascinating details emerged about the crew and Amundsen such as his love of pancakes (‘divine’ )- so the cook became adept at making them ! The parallel story of Scott’s misadventures always brings tears to the eye and that was well told too .
Too many things to record here but I can’t recommend Oslo enough - sadly there wasn’t time for the Kon-Tiki museum which was opposite the Fram - another time :))

In other news we managed to catch a bus back to the area near the hotel unaided - lucky as I don’t think we would have made the walk ! Now collapsed on the bed . Edward Munch’s paintings and art galleries will also have to wait for another time !
