"“What better way to honor John McCain's life of service than, as best we can, follow his example.”
- President Barack Obama, 1st Sep 2018
Much of today was spent engaged in tedious paper work and other chores as part of the getting readyness tasks that herald a new academic year. I did however, watch most of Senator John McCain’s memorial service at the National Cathedral in Washington, as televised and posted by Huff Post on Facebook. Regardless of political standpoint, this was a service of respectful admiration of, and love for, the Senator, and I was, we must all be, much affected, in particular by the words of President Obama whose eloquence and dignity throughout his eulogy was, as ever, a reminder of what a political leader should look like. The social media symbols of approval and affection floated up the screen constantly, never more so than when Obama was talking. The cadence of his personal and insightful commentary on the life and values of a political adversary, the integrity and affection afforded by the language used to elevate the sadness of loss and instead, transform it to the highest platform of respect and admiration that all might aspire to deserve. The passing of John McCain is undeniably tragic - but today we heard the best words describe the best of lives and for that I am enriched, inspired, and grateful.
