What holiday is it?
My Blip today is a picture of our local hardware store getting set up for the arrival of fresh Christmas trees. The trees aren't technically out yet and of course it takes time to set this all up so even though it's still five days before Thanksgiving I understand the early preparations in this case.
However, sales on Black Friday now start their advertising weeks before Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Day is now the 'jump start day' on Black Friday and all these sales get more media and print coverage than the actual day of Thanksgiving! Why are we rushing the holidays?
Why can't we look forward to and enjoy each holiday before being bombarded with advertising for the next one? Why are people hanging Christmas lights already when we haven't even enjoyed our Thanksgiving dinner?
We are lucky to live in a country where we can celebrate Thanksgiving. Let's hope that special day doesn't get totally pushed aside. It is a time set aside to spend with family and friends where we can reflect on how thankful we all are for having each other and the wonderful food we prepared. I hope for a few hours we can enjoy this time without looking at our clocks thinking about getting out early to take advantage of all those holiday sales.
