Tamworth benifactors
The statue of Sir Robert Peel was erected in Tamworth during his lifetime. The inscription is dated 1840. Twice Prime Minister and famed also for the 'Peelers' or 'Bobbies'. A very wealthy man in own right. Was responsible for reforming the Tory Party from which evolved the Conservatives.
The old market behind the statue was built from funds provided by Thomas Guy in 1701. He provided alms houses and was also an MP in his day. Noted for being very miserly he amassed a vast fortune from South Sea Trading. In later life he built the world famous Guy's Hospital. In his will he provided cash for the hostpital and also bequeathed monies for impoverished prisoners after their release from jail. Some would say he died a reformed character !
