A day in Edinburgh on Friday.
First up was a visit to the Scottish Parliament building at Holyrood, where the World Press Photography exhibition (pictured) was entering its final two days. Some fabulous photographs, as one might expect, but many of them quite harrowing. Human cruelty, despair and misery in full view, as well as plenty of 'lighter' subjects.
After lunch, an exhibition of a totally different nature: Rembrandt: Britain's Discovery of the Master at the National Gallery on the Mound. As well as paintings and etchings by Rembrandt himself, whom the introductory video called 'the master of the selfie', there were works, spread over six galleries, by artists inspired by his work over the past 250-or-so years.
Took the time to visit a couple of other smaller, contemporary exhibitions in the National Gallery while I was there, before catching the train home. Another highlight was that I managed to get in and out of Edinburgh and avoid the worst of the Festival Fringe! Happy to leave them to it.
