Kakabeak - ngutukaka
Spent the day catching up with friends I hadn't seen for a while. Although Rose's garden is rather overgrown due to her health it is something of a treasure chest, with gems around every corner, of which there are many. As I was leaving I spotted this kaka beak just coming into flower. Kaka beak are a critical endangered New Zealand native with only 150 plants known to be growing in the wild. There are a number of programmes working to reintroduce this nutritious plant into areas which are inaccessible to many of the animals which have decimated it.
