Daddy's Girl

We had an unexpected treat this morning -- a visit from a somewhat bedraggled adult male pileated woodpecker [2nd extra photo] and his curious female fledgling.

Ensconced on the deck railing, she eagerly looked all around this new environment and up at her dad [1st extra photo], who was tucking into the suet and seed cake on the high feeder as if he hadn't had a good meal in some time!

Ms. PW Fledgling attempted to fly up to the high feeder a time or two, but couldn't figure out how to land on it. I suspect she'll master that in the next day or two.

The term "pileated" refers to the bird's prominent red crest, derived from the Latin pileatus, meaning "capped." (Wikipedia)
