Movember Champion

In 1979, jockey Bob Champion was diagnosed with testicular cancer and told he only had 8 months to live. In the same year Aldaniti, a not very talented race horse with legs as fragile as glass, was retired as his owners were told he would never race again. However against all the odds, the unlikely couple tugged at the nation's heartstrings by winning the Grand National in 1981.

More than making racing history, Bob Champion went on to found a cancer charity and made it acceptable to talk about men's cancer - in particular testicular and prostate cancer - for the first time.

In November 2003, in Melbourne, Australia, 30 men recorded the growth of their moustaches as stunt to raise awareness of men's cancer. In 2011 over 845,000 bros worldwide took part in Movember, raising funds and awareness.

This is a shot of Bob Champion, taken at Cheltenham racecourse today, 33 years after his diagnosis was made, and looking absolutely fantastic.

Whilst Bob is free of facial hair, there were numerous examples of 16 days of upper lip growth watching a great day's racing.
