Abutilon

When I was standing in for someone at the Messenger last month I was given a small plant by one of the readers. She had grown a number from seed and had brought one for everyone. It wasn't a plant I had heard of before so was intrigued to see what would develop. I planted it up in a pot and stood it at the back door. it is now about three feet tall and has had a mass of these lovely lilac blooms for the last couple of weeks. 
I have since googled it and believe an alternative name is flowering maple. It also comes in a  variety of colours but is not hardy.
It has been a  truly wonderful gift!
