Fledgling

An all-to-common sight to be greeted with in the mornings. A lot of the gull fledglings die off, either from starvation, or from botulism, as the parents feed them infected scraps from the local rubbish dumps.
We try to put them out of their misery, and hide the bodies from the eyes of visitors, but it's impossible to get all of them. Quite often, visitors will come to tell us about "injured" gulls, and ask us to save them, or let them take them to the mainland. We explain that they're poisoned with botulinum, and it's 100% fatal to gulls and very dangerous for humans. This is not always a good enough answer; some people get quite stroppy and demand we rescue this particular poisoned gull out of the thousands of healthy gulls on the island. Can be difficult to be polite with their misplaced concern, but we usually manage.
