The book said it was a public footpath, and so did the signs. But the cows disagreed. And a few yards later, after we had gingerly made our way between the cows, it turned out the farmer didn't like the footpath either, and had tied up the gate we were supposed to go through. The cows weren't any more friendly when we made our way back out.
