East Lothian Walk

The walk we promised ourselves  but was rained off, was finally achieved, after coffee in Sew In Stitches, one of our favourite cafes.

Using the pamphlet '10 Walks Around Aberlady, Gullane and Dirleton' produced for the Gullane Area Community council, we chose a simple 1½ mile walk from Aberlady to Spittal. Apparently, in times past, children from Spittal and Lochill walked this way to school, and families to church, in Aberlady. The map shows the start of the walk onto the field path.

In no great hurry this took us along fields of wheat, cabbage/sprouts and harvested ?oilseed rape, through woodland, across a stream, by-passing the stile we were instructed to climb.

In the processs we watched a variety of butterflies - speckled wood, large whites, peacock, red admiral, fritillary and several ladybirds, along the way disturbing roe deer and fuelling ourselves on blackberries until we reached the main railway line and the track to the few cottages that make up Spittal.

Advised by the pamphlet that the road was too busy to provide a satisfactory return, we turned round and took the same route back to the car, full of admiration for those children that took this route twice a day during their primary education.
