When will the madness stop?
It is human nature to search for patterns, or order in randomness. It is our strength and our weakness.
So, just now many people feel the need to come up with convoluted conspiracy theories about what is going on with JRM and his ERG (the worst 70s prog rock band ever); or what genius plan Bozo the Clown is enacting to rise to power.
And it is tempting. The alternative is that we are heading towards the cliff, a deadly fall to follow, with egotistical morons at the wheel.
I’ve said for a while now that it won’t happen. Not really. The most likely is that we pretend to leave, but by and large don’t; in a ‘least harm’ approach that leaves us worse off, but broadly intact. But there is a real prospect now that it doesn’t happen at all. Polls show that people have seen the absolute sh*tshow unfolding and are changing their minds. I think a 2nd referendum would actually accelerate that process. It is much harder to peddle the ‘Brexit dividend’ line when everyone has seen that what will actually be delivered is a particularly wiffy sh*t sandwich.
