Wismar

We had stayed in a rather odd campsite south of Wismar; it was cheap at 10 Euros but very much a throwback to the time when this was East Germany as it seemed fixed in the past. Wismar is another city that was part of the Hanseatic League and is now, along with Stralsund, a world heritage site thanks to their brick Gothic churches and other buildings. Looking at photos of the city in 1989 and comparing to today the renovation and tidying is amazing. When in East Germany there obviously wasn’t a lot of money for redevelopment and there was none of the 1960 and 1970 decades of concrete replacing the old. As a result the whole place is sympathetically restored and is a wonderful place to stop. We thought we would just spend 2 hours there but in the end looked around for 6 hours. The blip is the street in which the world heritage house is located. We left about 4:30 as we need to get a bit closer to Amsterdam where we were catching the ferry on Tuesday. The weather had been hot and sunny most of the time, but it clouded in about 3 and we had heavy thunderstorms as we drove to Bremen. The extra is on the autobahn approaching Bremen as the sky began to clear.
