The Answer

The question was, how to prepare a glut of apples for jam, stewing etc.

The Answer: Buy a lathe. Went looking for a simple apple corer which wasn't to be found wherever we looked. Eventually got this gizmo which peels, slices and cores the apple in a matter of seconds. Very often these things don't actually work as intended. This one does.
