A national hunger strike from August 8-10 ended tonight. The Portland contingent was six people. Before they broke their fast (with fruit and the bread you see here), they had a ceremony with two speakers, the woman in pink who is a Mexican-American veteran, and the young man in the black shirt, who is a DACA recipient who has lived in the USA since he was four years old. He is currently a pre-med student, and if he doesn't get deported he hopes to become a physician. About 20 people showed up to participate in the event, which was held at the Japanese-American Historical Plaza.
You may notice Sue on the right. She helped to close the ceremony with a meditation, offering the "merit" of the hunger strike to the children who are still incarcerated, still separated from their parents.
