The Leaves - Hey Joe (1966)
Hey Joe is mostly associated with the hit version by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, their debut single, but its first commercial recording was by the Leaves in 1965. The song was written in the mid-fifties by Billy Roberts, a California-based folksinger. David Crosby discovered the song and used to perform it with the Byrds in Los Angeles, but it was not recorded by the band as Jim (later Roger) McGuinn and the others didn't like it.
After the Leaves' single it became something of a standard, with many other bands and artists featuring it in their repertoire, including the Music Machine and Tim Rose, whose versions may have inspired the Hendrix arrangement. Another early version was on the first album by Love, it having been brought to the band by their guitarist Bryan Maclean, who had learned it from the Byrds while he was their roadie.
The Byrds eventually put it on their album Fifth Dimension. The Leaves by this time had re-recorded the originally unsuccessful single twice, this third version being the most successful and the one on their first album.
