The Grape Arbor....

...is 105 years old this year, & is part of the beautiful grounds that house both Saint Francis Seminary & the Mother House for the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi. The retired Sisters are the ones who planted what I've referred to, in an earlier blip, as the "mini-arboretum" with all the flowers & bushes. They also tend a vegetable garden, an apple orchard, and the grape arbor. The vegetables & apples are shared with various meal sites, and the grapes are made into wine, which is sold at their yearly "Wine and Vine" event which helps raise money toward the Sisters' care and housing. 
(for those of you who like History: the first Sisters came to this site in 1849--six of them--from Bavaria. They came to minister to the large number of German People that had immigrated to Milwaukee, & they  provided education to a great many of them. As more young women joined the order, the Sisters opened a High School on these grounds in 1904. At that time, most of the students attending the school came from a long distance away, so they boarded at the school for the year.  The High School continued educating young women until 1991, when it became too expensive to keep the school open & the doors were closed.) The oldest of the retired nuns is 99--the youngest, in her early 70's--with a median age of mid 80's. It's amazing to me how much they accomplish!   :))
