Kaloko-Honokohau
We visited Kaloko-Honokohau park which features a look back into how native Hawaiians survived the harsh volcanic landscape with ingenuity (building fish ponds and fish traps, for example). The beach was quiet and the water in the bay very calm . . . Alana couldn't help herself, she HAD to go into the water even though we hadn't planned for it (no swim diaper or suit!). But I like to be a "yes" parent when I can so what they hay, I let her wade in. In fact I was surprised that she was so eager - this was the first time on our trip that she voluntarily approached the ocean (probably because there weren't any waves). Moments after I took this picture she sat down in the water and became completely drenched . . . but she loved every moment! Too bad Ron wasn't there - he would have been so proud.
Earlier in the day we also visited Pu'uhonua O Honaunau park - about a three hour drive from our cabin. This side of the island is beautiful - I see why most of the resorts are here. Beautiful water, light trade winds, and gorgeous, gorgeous views.
