Triple Arch
This triple arch is on the south-east corner of the South transept of St Cross Church. No one really knows its history but possibly it was a doorway leading to a small cloister that in turn led to a small building (the are references t the "Clerken House" pulled down in the 1370s ). The carpentry must have been interesting for the doors.
Not that long ago there was a grave stone in this corner but that has been removed.
The hospital of St. Cross was founded in 1136 by Henry of Blois. Of the present church the north and south chapels, the piers and arches of the central tower, the south transept, the lower portion of the north transept, the east bay of the nave, the two east bays of the north aisle and the eastern bay of the south aisle appear to have been built progressively towards the end of the 11th century. Further additions were made up until the 15th century.
I love the architectural detail on a door that seems was not important.
