Yorkshire

Well, it seemed like a good idea for this Yorkshire Lass to spend Yorkshire Day in the Best County of all. And so we did. Sadly it was in the prettier, posher part – North Yorkshire – rather than the grittier, moorland that always feel like home to me. (See Jeanneb’s super picture) But we had a lovely day nevertheless.

We set off through Wensleydale, stopping at Hawes for cheese of course. Then we went through to a place I cannot for the life of me think why I have never been before – Richmond. Passed close by hundreds of times, but never been into the town. What a lovely place it is too.

Richmond Castle is very impressive and we spent a long while there. Built in the 11th century, just after the Normans arrived, it is on an amazing site – high above the cliffs of the River Swale. But to my mind Easby Abbey, close by, is even more impressive (pictured). It is certainly on a par with the other Yorkshire Abbeys, although less well known.

Then we avoided the A66 and drove back through Swaledale. A super drive with fabulous views.

I have tagged this for Wide Angle Wednesday. There was a lot of 'life' here at one time and the evidence of life is all around – a tenuous link, but there you go. And funnily enough I was trying to get a picture without any life in it!!
