Junction Function

Junction box? Exchange box? Who knows.

This is one of many such boxes I pass if I choose, as I did today, to walk round the block at lunchtime. The boxes vary in size; sometimes there are two; sometimes a cluster; some may be concrete. They are often on bits of land that are abandoned or where the perimeter fence of private land has been drawn back to keep them on the street.

They look as if they are working - serving some kind of purpose - but at the same time they look as if they have not worked for many decades. They look as if they will probably outlast most of the flimsy new buildings that are being put up in the estate, if only because noone knows whether or not they can safely be dismantled.
