between the river and the sea

I had a longing to camp here for our final night on Islay - almost the end of the road, facing east towards the Mull of Kintyre, at Claggain Beach. Further up the road is Ardtalla, and then the track to Proaig, where we once ate our sandwiches in a rundown bothy  on the way to Ben Bhegeir.

Unusually for Islay, this beach is stony rather than sandy. At the mouth of the Claggain River, someone had whiled away a few hours balancing stones. We whiled away a few hours looking out to sea (D and I) and getting very wet in the river (Jess).

We drove here last night in a thunderstorm, the roads awash with rain. I had an irrational fear that we might slide into the sea during the night. (We didn't). This morning the sun has come out and the old Islay magic has ensnared me. We are already making plans to come back, although it won't be for a while...

extra is breakfast by the sea...
