Whale-watchers

The whales are still with us. A small pod of mothers and calves lolled about in the summer sunshine blowing glimmering spouts, surprisingly close to shore. We are told the ones with young calves are the last to head for northern waters. We foolish human beings are still thrilled by the size and majesty of wiser creatures who apparently don't set out to harm each other. Why is that so hard for humans to understand?
