Saltburn-by-the-sea
This afternoon, after the rain had stopped, my daughter and I decided to go to the beach. To be precise, to Saltburn-by-the-sea, because she needed to take pictures of a traditional pier for her art project. Saltburn has a very traditional and charming pier. It also tied in well with my project on dereliction....well... it isn't derelict, but it is old. It is the most northerly pier remaining, and was opened in 1869, making it 149 years old this year. This is the underside, as I'm fascinated by the pattern of lines underneath.
The extra is a surfer with the pier in the background, with the traditional end of pier fishermen.
The pier has been looked after; I'm sure you are aware that those piers simply left to weather have long since collapsed. This is a testament to local efforts to maintain the structure and keep the chaos in check.
