No. 9: Speckled Wood

Finding a butterfly was much more challenging today - and will be worse tomorrow. The weather broke late yesterday and meant that today was much more comfortable, but it was also very breezy. I thought my best bet would be to go down to the river where it would be more sheltered, but even down there the wind was quite gusty. There were a few Green -veined Whites around but I thought a more suitable one for today would be this Speckled Wood. He is hiding behind a Sweet Chestnut leaf, disguising the fact that he has lost much of his hind wing. In extras, you can see the damage more  clearly. Heavy rain forecast for tomorrow.
