The dropped stitch

Sanger Mill, Westray

Excellent day.

Early morning ferry to the island of Westray. Work was soon completed, leaving me the rest of the day off, the only return ferry being at 6.35pm.

I found a perfect walk. It included cliff tops, farmland, a sandy beach, a windmill, watermill, and thrown in for dramatic effect, a crossing from the North Sea to the Atlantic. All this, and only three and a half miles long!

The blip is a ruined windmill - not many of those in Orkney. It was a completely simple tower. Almost a cartoon character of a windmill. Note also the kiln on the right. Oats and bere would be threshed by the mill and then dried in the kiln before being taken to the nearby Rapness Mill for grinding.

Extras - Rapness Watermill and the beautiful Bay of Tafts.
I actually returned there in the afternoon once the sun was out to take this photo. The morning weather was misty but warm. Very atmospheric for ruined buildings.
