Climbing da Auld Man o Hoy
A fairly dull day, overcast, breezy, showers in the morning, heavier in the afternoon. Lovely warm and sunny evening.
Up early and headed for the ferry to Hoy. First stop was breakfast at Emily's Tearooms, then on to Rackwick, the most beautiful place in Orkney. While Orkney lies mostly flat, Hoy is rugged, loads of croft houses and heathery, much like back home. Rackwick is by far my favourite place yet. A hike over the hill while there too. After lunch, it was mostly sightseeing from the car, as the rain was heavier. Loads of military buildings to check out along the way. Ferry back and mince and tatties for tea. Head out for a walk with the fine evening.
A fine moderate hike over the hills this morning, and was looking for an old man, the Old Man of Hoy. I've seen him from the sea before, but he's way more impressive from the clifftop, standing at 450 feet high. Not so impressive to me, but you might be able to spot four climbers heading up, they are far down, NO THANK YOU! It was bad enough peering over from the edge. Hope they made it up and down ok, and also the climb back to where I was. Added a few extra pics, including Rackwick.
