This pump was unveiled....

Why, you may ask, would a water pump be unveiled with much ceremony - especially as it has no handle. On the other hand you may be familiar with this very pump and the story connected with it.
The pump is in Broadwalk Street, Soho, and comemorated the Soho Cholora outbreak. Dr John Snow did some mapping of the outbreaks and realised that they were centred on the pump in this location. When his reseach was not instantly understood he took things into his own hands -literally- by removing the pump handle.
Strangely, this is the first thing I can remember learning about at school. I wonder if my interest in social history developed very early. Or perhaps I just remember very little about my early time at school!
