The standing stone 'Font of the Werewolves'

Translated from the french;

The legend of the standing stone 'The font of the werewolves'

At least 50 years ago there was an old man who was at least 80 years old. It was him who told me that when he was young he had seen, one evening around Michaelmas, the standing stone not far from Le Mas and La Billaudrie.

This old man was called the great Francet and he had always heard the werewolves came on the evening of michaelmas to 'monkey about' at the standing stone.

This particular evening he hid inside a hedge with a rifle. There are 6 tracks leading to this point. This moonlit evening, it wasn't very warm, the owls were singing in the woods of Tranché and Chiron Mora. As midnight approached, the dogs barked on all sides, and Francet saw people arriving from all the tracks.

They had their heads covered by sacks, he couldn't see their eyes. They all assembled in front of this standing stone which was at least 5 feet high. Each of them carried a cauldron. Suddenly, they joined hands. Francet counted 12 of them. They started a round dance and started howling like wolves. And they turned, and turned.

All of a sudden, underneath the clogs of the largest man came flames as high as their arms. Then Francet counted again and there were 13! Francet was very afraid and had goosebumps. Next there was a cauldron which danced on its own in the middle of the round. Then everything stopped, the dancing, the flames and their shirts smoked from the heat!

At this moment the cauldron fell flat on the ground. The largest man there cried whose is this cauldron? To which someone replied Leridon from Baunac!

Great Francet quietly left his place under the hedge, and he crossed a field to get back to his hamlet.

He told me that he spent 8 days without sleep because of this terrible experience, and 50 years later this still troubled him.

Several years later according to Emile from La Billaudrie and the son of Bujhaud had the idea to make an offering in the hollow under the stone. He took some holy water and poured it into the hole. Since then nobody has see the werewolves of the standing stone.

But there are nevertheless, black dogs that like to come to the stone and relieve themselves there, in full daylight. And believe me, those dogs aren't very catholic!

So now, everyone calls the standing stone the 'Font of the werewolves'
