Swallows and Amazons Forever!

We drive north from Voss, up the beautiful Myrkdalen, and over Vikafjell. Our objective today is a campsite at Balestrand on the north side of Sognefjord, the longest of Norway’s fjords, stretching 205 km inland from the ocean.

From the summit of Vikafjell, over the 25 km run down to Vangsnes on the south side of the fjord, we average -116 Watt hours per kilometre. This puts 20 km of range back into the battery.

Over Sognefjord on the ferry, we soon locate the campsite. It’s unsatisfactory, lying as it does within the small town. We do some shopping and decide to continue.

We head north, and then west, up the impressive climb over Gaularfjellet, with a panoramic viewpoint below the summit.

On the other side, the valley is beautiful, with many waterfalls. Our intended destination is still some way off, so we start looking for places to stop. We consider wild-camping, but don’t spot anywhere really suitable. Soon enough we reach Hov Hyttegrend (hut ground) and decide to rent a couple of tiny cabins for the night. The location is idyllic. The kids play in the canoe (don’t go too near the top of the next waterfall!) and I can just about stretch an extension cable from one of the cabins to the car, to charge it, very slowly, overnight.
