Sod's lane

I have heard of Sod's law but this lane near me is a puzzle. Did it belong to to Mr Sod? If it referred to clumps of turf, the apostrophe would surely be after the s. There are some strange village and road names around here so this may be part of a mini series. I have after all already blipped from New York!
