The dropped stitch

Eiderdown

V was about to throw out this old eiderdown. I think she may have said 'It's beyond repair'. I think I wasn't listening.... but imagining how lovely it would look next to the green wall in my bedroom.

I was in a hurry as I squished it into a cardboard box, so ignored the cloud of feathers, threw the box into the car, and headed for the boat.

Only now, at home, with the treasure lying on my sitting room floor, do I realise it really IS beyond repair. The fabric is so thin in places you can put your finger through it. It has been patched but the areas round the patches are going into holes. It needs to be cleaned, but would never survive the process.

It's a beautiful thing, but I'm going to have to dump it.

I've got as far as putting it into a rubbish bag. It is waiting by the front door. I can almost believe I might reopen the bag and find it has miraculously mended itself....

Tomorrow...
I'll throw it away....
