Helsinki to Mikkeli - Day 6
Double decker train! Cool eh? Obviously I booked seats on the top deck.
It arrived into the station about 20 minutes before it was due to leave and immediately allowed people to board. It then left perfectly on time. This on its own was amazingly impressive to us but the train itself was also impressive. Very quiet and smooth, the seats were spacious with lots of legroom (never much of a problem to me to be fair) and the aisles were wide so that you could walk down them without smashing into people in their seats at every bump - not that there were many, or indeed any of those. A man came round selling ice cream at one point! It arrived perfectly on time too. Awesome.
Unfortunately it was bucketing down in Mikkeli when we arrived. We did a little exploring when we got there but mainly just enough to locate tourist information, the bookshop, the market, the nearest supermarket and to discover that my right shoe has developed a hole in the sole. To my disappointment, the boat that used to leave from Mikkeli to do tours of Lake Saimaa no longer left from there and the one a few miles down the road that went to the ancient rock paintings had located to entirely another point in the country, Turku! However, plenty of other things to look forward to here so we will just have to leave it this time and perhaps plan another trip sometime. :-)
