Desert sculptures, Broken Hill

We started the day taking the van into the engineer to fix a broken plate holding the push bikes to the back of the van, the rough roads had weakened the structure. As we weren’t sure of the time it would take we did some touristy things around town. Broken Hill has about 18,000 people, 1200 kilometres west of Sydney. It was the original site of the BHP mine, with the richest body of silver, lead and zinc in the world. The rocks here are 1600-1700 million years old.

The miners had a hard time in this remote part of the country and there are many interesting relics to see. It is also a thriving art community. One famous artist was a miner who dabbled when he wasn’t mining. Pro Hart was not one of my favourites but after visiting his gallery I have grown to appreciate his work much more. We also went through the best rail museum I’ve seen.

This evening we went up to the sculptures on top of a high hill and I tried to get shots some without people in the way...the colours of the sunset were spectacular.
