MUTE SWAN (cygnus olor)
I was very pleasantly surprised at the sight of a white (mute)swan on the Christchurch Estuary today. They are classified as rare in New Zealand & there is a suggested number of 100 of them in the wild. Mostly found in Lakes, Parks and Private waterfowl Habitats - made this a special treat to see this one on the Estuary. It appears to me to be a young male, the beak colour has yet to mature to a brighter orange. Its a very big bird - I unfortunately missed a photo of him stretching his wings - which were huge... I think Queen Elizabeth is the keeper of white swans so if anyone is in touch with her please let her know of this one at the Christchurch Estuary......
