East Lothian is one of the few counties that still have fingerposts with the fingers indicating distances in fractions of a mile.  Usually mileage is measured to the nearest quarter mile, although measurements to the eighth of a mile are given in East Lothian - an eighth of a mile is a furlong which used to be a common measurement of length.  In 1964 regulations encouraged local authorities to remove and replace traditional fingerposts with new designs but it was not compulsory to do so.  Most counties removed their fingerposts but in some of the rural byways of East Lothian several remain.   In 2005 the Department of Transport reacted to concern about the loss of historic fingerposts from the rural landscape so advised that the traditional posts should be kept and regularly maintained.  This one in Gifford shows four places measured in eighths of a mile.
