British Wild Flowers series No.12

Common Blue-sow-thistle.

A tall perennial growing up to 2 metres. This is not a Native plant. It grows in several European mountain ranges. It was introduced into gardens in 1823.

It was first recorded as a a naturalised plant in Britain by a roadside at Glenridding, Ullswater, in 1915.

I know of two places in Arnside where it grows.

I have added an extra because it seemed to me that it represented the strong colours of high summer.
