How bloody ridiculous is this. I am really not sure what the government are thinking here. Next it'll be getting rid of computers and sticking to books and handwriting for everything. PROGRESS!!!???!!!!!! As a primary maths teacher (maybe some might say in a position to have a pretty decent viewpoint on the issue) this is utter bollocks. I have yet to teach a child that relies on a calculator to make the decisions for them, to identify the operation in a given problem or even let them know if they are doing the right thing in the first place!! We teach them that - the calculator (when it is used - rarely actually needed) is just a tool like a ruler, scissors or electric drill. You need to know how to use one and banning them will not achieve anything whatsoever.
