Islay Chaffinch
Tuesday was a bit of a slow start, following the previous day's over exuberance in the alcohol department. We decided that we ought to visit either Kildalton or the American Monument on the Oa. Although they lay in opposite directions, in the end we did both, starting with Kildalton.
Along the way we came across a flock of sheep who appeared to be occupying the track. As we inched forward slowly on the motorbikes the sheep started to trot up the road ahead of us. Although there were plenty of opportunities for them to leave the road they seemed to want to keep going along it. We increased our speed slightly and instead of running onto the surrounding land, they started to pick up speed too! Eventually one or two geniuses amongst the flock came up with the concept of a 90 degree change of direction, but some stayed just ahead of us until we came to a field with a gateway into which they trotted. I think I can therefore now add sheep drover to my list of life experiences.
An afternoon at Laphroaig was followed by an evening in the pub at Port Ellen shared with groups of Swedish and German sailors, and very jolly it was too.
