Fall-y Down Gambrel, Ohio

A gambrel or gambrel roof is a usually symmetrical two-sided roof with two slopes on each side. (The usual architectural term in eighteenth-century England and North America was "Dutch roof.") The name comes from the Medieval Latin word gamba, meaning horse's hock or leg.

We head to Ohio via Barry’s Bagels. Yasmin lives in Perrysburg. She has Lilly with her after yesterday’s showing of Mamma Mia. The plan is that we all head to her sister’s (Mandy/Maria) to hang out round the pool.

Mandy, Dave and the kids (Dillon, Alana) live in Bowling Green. “Does it have a bowling green?” I ask. Apparently not - it’s named after Bowling Green, Kentucky. I give up and don’t even ask if the Kentucky version has a bowling green.

The pool is great, despite a giant inflatable pride unicorn and a posse of children with water squirters. There’s a huge spread of food - hot dogs, Phillipino noodle dish, salmon steak, salads. And a can of Mexican beer. There’s still plenty to eat when we leave to take Lily home.
