Strange Fruit
It was the odd looking pink and green thing labeled 'Dragon Fruit' that caught my attention in the grocery store today but it is the little stickers on the fruit that wind up everywhere except on the fruit that occasion a comment from me today. I suppose it makes it easier for the check-out clerks to know what they are charging us for by looking at these stickers, but in general, they are a nuisance. They come off, people take them off...you can see one on an orange and another stuck to the shelf at lower right...if they haven't fallen off, or they are stuck to a tomato, they are impossible to get off. However, being plastic, they cannot go in the compost, the garbage disposal, or the septic system. Once removed, what does one do with them?
At the health club I used to go to, there was always a bowl of apples on the counter. You'd pick one up thinking it would be a nice healthy snack to eat on the way to the next thing, but what to do with the little sticker? Many people stuck them to the fence, the garbage can, the tree trunks or even the ground. In the end, the people at the front desk had to take off all the stickers before they put the apples out. I wonder what they did with them?
I usually look around for something that is going into the recycle bin and stick them to that.
I know...definitely a first world problem. When it comes to the myriad larger issues confronting us, I am appealing to Mother Nature to send cooler weather, and consoling myself with the words of someone I heard on the radio today as I worked on Peter's quilt. I didn't catch his name, but he was an aide to Barack Obama and a very interesting political commentator. Everything he said resonated with me because of his obvious respect for Obama and his obvious distaste for his successor.
While many are saying that Obama was an anomaly of government, he believes that Trump is the anomaly in the constantly evolving process that is politics....a speed bump in the forward progress of democracy.
I would like to believe that this country has some kind of moral and ethical core that will eventually reassert itself. I hope we can hold out that long....
