Why don’t we call the terrified children whose incarceration is riveting the country what they are at this point? Not migrants. Not detainees. Not pawns, they’re hostages.
President Trump is using children as flesh-and-blood bargaining chips, hoping that their ordeal and reasonable Americans’ disgust with it will get him what he wants. Saturday, we were in San Diego at one of 750 “Families Belong Together” rallies that occurred throughout the country in every state — from big cities such as Boston, Chicago and New York to tiny ones such as Antler, N.D., which has a population of 27.
The idea of kids in cages and asylum seekers in prisons and moms being separated from breast-feeding children is beyond politics. It really is just about decency and evil.
